sukkah city stl

Last fall Design+Make participated in Sukkah City STL’s national competition held on the campus of Washington University in St Louis, Missouri. The goal of this competition was to create an innovative structure for the Jewish religious festival Sukkot. This structure, called a Sukkah, serves as a symbolic wilderness shelter during the week long harvest celebration. Using straw bales as an unconventional construction unit, Design+Make constructed a Sukkah that takes its place almost anywhere by representing the fruits of labor. Inside is a place of quiet reflection, surrounded by towering bales of straw, inspiring a sense of awe in the inhabitant. The ancient method of bundling grain has a direct influence on the form of the Sukkah, reminding those of the harvest and the bounty that they are thankful for.
