apdesign desks

With a college-wide shortage of studio work surfaces the first task of the 2014-2015 Design+Make team was the design and fabrication of a studio work area. Not just an exercise in desk design, the APDesign desks also served as a programming exercise in the development of a collaborative work environment. Comprised of a singular work surface, the combined desks provide a workspace for sixteen individuals in a collaborative setting. Each workstation incorporates an integrated smartphone rest, writing utensil holder, under table storage, and cup holder in addition to a generous work area. As the first project of the 2014-2015 studio, the APDesign desks served as an introduction to the use of component mockups and prototyping in the design process. The result is a monolithic work surface that seems to float mid air above the concrete floor below.
